Salisbury Mayor Kicks Off Re-Election Campaign

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury Mayor Jake Day kicked off his re-election campaign Tuesday as the election season on Delmarva gets underway.

Day held a kick-off event and fundraiser in Downtown Salisbury to mark the start of his run for a second term. Salisbury native Day was first elected mayor in 2015, after serving on the city council.

"The theme is, this is a great city, this is a comeback city, a city I was proud to come back to myself but we aren't done," Day says.

Day adds that he wants to continue to build on the growth that the city has seen over his term as mayor.

"We've made a lot of progress in the last few years. We've added 2,500 jobs in four years," Day says. "We're a city that's growing. We're Maryland's fastest growing city so I want to keep all of that up."

Challenging Day is Wayne King, a conservative Republican originally from Long Island. We spoke with King, who says he's focusing on bringing more business to the area, as well as looking at crime, safety and the economy.

In a statement to WBOC, King says: "I believe the City of Salisbury needs to be more fiscally responsible and transparent. To stimulate the economy and bring in larger businesses like Salisbury had in the past, we need to improve our livability rating. To do this, we need to address the crime issues; which include gangs, drugs and homelessness. As a former business owner for over 20 years I have the skills, knowledge and experience to perform these tasks."

King adds that his own rally will be held Aug. 24 at the Riverwalk Amphitheater.

Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Five council seats are also up for election in Salisbury. According to the city clerk, the filing deadline to run for office is Aug. 20.
