OCEAN CITY, Md. - It's back to school season for more than just students in Ocean City.  Ocean City University is a 10-week program for locals to learn more about their town government.

"Ocean City's really unique in the sense that we're a small town in the winter time, but then we swell up to Maryland's second largest city in the summertime. And there's a lot of areas that interest people on how we do that," Communications Manager Jessica Waters said.

Waters says Cathy Mathias started the program in 2004 when people began expressing interest in knowing how various city departments worked.  Since then the biannual program has been successful in spreading education about things like the police department, public works and city government.

"A way that not only could our community really learn more about Ocean City's departments specifically, but get a better understanding of municipal government and how it works in Ocean City," Waters said.

Waters says the 10-week course will offer field trips weekly to various city facilities that give people an inside look at how the town operates.  Ocean City is also hoping complaints on how things are run will decrease once people become more aware after this program.

"It's interesting because we see people that don't necessarily understand how things are done. Whether it's the police department or public works or even our budget. So this program can be really eye opening for people that maybe have questions about why we do certain things the way we do," Waters said.

The semester will start on September 11 and run through November every Wednesday night from 6-9 p.m.  To sign up for Ocean City University, visit the town's website at www.oceancitymd.gov.
