New North Dorchester High School Opens

Posted: Updated:

HURLOCK, Md.- It's a new place for students to call home - the new North Dorchester High School in Hurlock has finally opened after years of construction.

Take the first steps into the new 116,000-square-foot building and you'll know why it's creators call it "state of the art."

Some amenities include a smooth vinyl flooring, a spacious gym, and an auditorium with enough space to seat more than 600 people.

It's a new beginning for Principal Jacqueline Sorrells, who says the space will be used for both its natural lighting and 18 tech-savvy classrooms to boost school spirit.

"I know the classroom is going to be a powerful place because it was a powerful place in the former building," Sorrells said. "But the opportunity to have this type of a setting for our young people to enjoy, I'm looking forward to seeing those relationships grow."

Some finishing touches will be added before the new school opens its doors to all 620 9th-12th graders starting this school year. School Superintendent Dave Bromwell says the building will bring the area and the community hope for an A-plus performance.

"It's very obvious that a happy student and a comfortable student is usually going to do well when they're in a classroom," Bromwell said. "If we're optimizing that in a classroom setting, I certainly hope our test scores go up."

Dorchester County Public Schools is hosting more public tours starting this weekend.

All together, the $43 million building will replace the old high school next door, which is currently being demolished and donating furniture to other parts of the school system.
