Police: 1-year-old Injured After Falling into Septic Tank in Frankford

FRANKFORD, Del.- A 1-year-old girl had to be rushed to the hospital after falling into an uncovered septic tank at a Frankford daycare on Friday.

Delaware State Police said it happened at Cozy Critters Child Care at 34371 Beaver Dam Road.

Those who witnessed the incident took immediate action, first by attempting to pull the child out and back on safe ground. However, that did not work. The child was struggling, perhaps being close to drowning.

George Lewis of Atlantic Refrigeration said he was at the daycare on a job and rushed to assist.

"We tried to get her out she slipped and she went away from the opening," Lewis said. "One of the brave young ladies that works there jumped into the septic tank and got a hold of the little girl and I helped pull the little girl out and then I assisted the young lady getting out of the tank."

The child was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be OK, police said. The woman who jumped into the tank to help get the child out is known at the daycare as "Miss Becky."

The incident is still under investigation, according to police.
