SALISBURY, Md. - The annual Wicomico County Fair at Winter Place Park began on Friday evening. Food, rides, games and crafts returned but replacing the horse show is a Renaissance themed section.

The chairman of the Wicomico County Fair, Zach Evans, has organized the fair for the past five years. He welcomes new ideas.

"We're celebrating 83 years of tradition right. It's important to be cognizant of the fact that things become stale," said Evans. "And you want to keep things fresh, keep things new, and you want to give people a reason to come back."

The famous five-foot frying pan returned this year as well. The Salisbury Lions Club started frying at 6am Friday morning and said they will go through 40 cases of chicken by the end of the day. The proceeds they make from their chicken sales go towards their charity fund. Harry Ireland is one of the two men who run the fryer.

"Well, it's a way to give back to the community. It makes me feel good," said Ireland.

The newest addition features knights in full armor, jousting competitions and a kissing booth featuring Spirit the unicorn. The owner of Kindred Spirits Barn, Kelly Howard, said this new section will be more educational than their past horse shows.

"People can stand on the sides and watch the show, they can look at the horses and go 'Oh, that's pretty'. But this way they get to see how horses were used in medieval times," said Howard.

The fair is open on Friday, 4-11pm, Saturday 10am-10pm and Sunday noon to 6pm. Parking and admission are free.
