SEAFORD, Del.- Firefighters and EMS stepped up to the plate in a big way on Sunday to raise funds for burn victims.

Seventeen teams met at the Seaford Sports Complex to take part in a softball tournament where entry fees and other funds raised during the tournament were given to the Delaware Burn Camp.

Delaware Burn Camp just wrapped up last week with the annual softball tournament always as the culmination to the camp. During camp, burn victims participate in various activities like horseback riding, archery, paddle boarding, and they also receive counseling as needed.

Most of this made possible through various donations and charities, including this Softball Tournament. Seaford Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jack Wilson said first responders are always happy to be in attendance to help with something so close to home.

"We do on occasion throughout the state have serious burn injuries or burn deaths that require some type of psychological help for either firefighters or for their families," he said.

Delaware Burn Camp does just this, and Joanne Hutchinson with the camp said the proceeds from the softball tournament will go directly to those who need it most.

"It really helps the kids learn that first of all they are not alone and that they have the opportunity to interact with a lot of the other campers who have experienced the same thing," she said.

Wilson says during one of the tournament's better years, they were able to raise nearly $24,000 for the Delaware Burn Camp.
