SALISBURY, Md.- Your view driving through the busy intersection of Riverside Drive, Carroll Street, Mill Street, and Camden Avenue in downtown Salisbury will look different soon. The city says work to build a 120-foot roundabout at the intersection is expected to get started in late September.

"I think it will have to help, because it's always blocked all the way down to Riverside Drive and it would just create more ease in everyone's day," said Abbi Custis of Salisbury.

A study of the area found several problems, including traffic backing up to Route 50 and unsafe traffic patterns on the bridge.

"Some of [the drivers] want to turn this way, end up going straight and they don't use their turn signals and it causes confusion," said Roscoe Henry of Salisbury.

The city says drivers can expect lane shifts while work on the roundabout is underway. However, there are no plans for a complete closure.

Some drivers have expressed concerns with traffic backing up in the roundabout.

"There's a lot of traffic in and out of here every day," said Henry.

Mayor Jake Day previously told WBOC those concerns would be addressed in the design phase and the timing of the lights at the intersection of West Main and Mill streets just down the road would work to prevent traffic from building up in the roundabout.

A $1.4 million contract was awarded to a Dover-based contractor for the project.

Day said the roundabout should take about six months to complete.
