M&H Restaurant to Close on Aug. 31

Posted: Updated:

MILTON, Del. - M&H has sat on Union Street Extension in Milton since 1953. It has fed breakfast and lunch to five generations Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. -2 p.m. The lunch prepared on Aug. 31 will be the last meal it serves.

Bob Reichenbach drives from Millsboro a couple times a week to eat omelets made by longtime cook, Dave. He and other local customers say there isn't any place in town to get a full breakfast as early as 6 a.m.

"There's other places around, but they just don't have the food and the friendship," says Reichenbach. "Everybody here is like friends."

Mary Buck is the niece of Mack and Helen, the M&H who started the business. She worked here herself for 35 years.

"They were a mom and pop business where he was the mechanic and she pumped gas, says Buck. "Then in '64 they built this store part on and she started serving sandwiches."

Buck's family had to sell the store when her aunt got sick in 2007. The next owner re-opened it soon after as the Route Five Grill.

On Oct. 8, 2012, Shawn Lovenguth found himself taking over.

"I sat down at Mary's kitchen table and M&H was reborn," he says.

The original M&H used to feature school desks for seating. In fact, they used to line the perimeter of the dining room.

" A group of people couldn't sit together unless they satside by side," Buck explains.

This is the first dollar bill earned under Lovenguth's ownership. His reason for closing is not a shortage of customers.

"It's really hard to find help. It's too busy for two people to run," he says.

Lovenguth ate here himself while growing up. Thanks to him, M&H will go down in history with the same name at its opening and its closing.

Lovenguth says it's likely that the owner of the garage next door could expand their business into M&H's portion of the building.
