Seaford Will Bring 'Oyster House Park' Along Nanticoke River

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del.- The City of Seaford is making plans to bring new waterfront park to the downtown Seaford area.

The park is a continued effort to revitalize Seaford. The park will lie on the banks on the Nanticoke River and feature a kayak and canoe launching site, a boardwalk, an amphitheater as well as a replica oyster house that was housed on the banks during the 1900s.

"We want to touch on that educational piece of what was done there, why it was done there, to share the natural history of the Nanticoke," Trisha Newcomer, Director of Economic Development with Seaford said.

The city says it is still in the conceptual phase of the project, but a grant has helped them fund the master plan for the Oyster House Park. Officials hope to have the master plan finalized by December.

Once the park is up and running Seaford officials hope to host events which will bring visitors to the area and boost the local economy.

"It's a win not only for downtown, but everybody," Necomer said. "To capture that history and the education behind that, but at the same time provide that outdoor venue, that ecotourism, be that trail-head to the Nanticoke."

The park will stretch from Pearl Street down past Church street.

The city says it has partnered with the Chesapeake Conservancy, and the Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy for a year and a half to get to this point in the project.
