Maryland School Officials Developing Plan for LGBT Curriculum

Posted: Updated:

Maryland lawmakers are looking to include lessons that include the fight for civil rights for both LGBT and those with disabilities.

Advocates argue these lessons have been absent from the classroom, but critics say it's not the state's right to teach these lessons.

Mom, Nicole Schlehofer, would like to see more LGBT lessons taught in school.

"We already cover LGBT people and history and if the school is going to start incorporating that into their existing curriculum it would make our jobs as parents so much easier."

Maryland State Delegate, Eric Luedtke, a Democrat representing Montgomery County is calling on the education department to add the LGBT rights and disability rights movement to the state's curriculum.

The delegate wrote a letter to the state superintendent of schools in part saying "these are important stories for our teachers to tell.

Luedtke also says it's important for all students to have a basic understanding of challenges faced.

In response, the Maryland State Department of Education says they plan to develop changes to the curriculum, but they haven't detailed what type of changes.

Pastor Bruce Morrison says he's against LGBT history lessons in schools.

"To be honest, I think it's the school system trying to indoctrinate our students to believe what the society wants them to."

But it's a belief and lesson some want taught in Maryland schools.
