DOVER, Del.- There was one thing on Amanda Lozada's mind as she waiting in a line of cars to pick up her son from Towne Point Elementary School: how was his first day of school?

"I'm just nervous to see how his day went," she said.

Thousands of students in Kent County returned to school on Thursday for the first day of classes in the Capital School District.

Towne Point Principal Toriano Giddens said the day went smoothly for the roughly 300 students who attend the school.

"The buses got here on time, parents dropped their kids off on time, so we probably only had about five kids who would be considered tardy," he said.

This school year marks the first one since Delaware's legislature passed a three-year, $75 million plan to add more supports for students with special needs or disabilities and kids who come from low-income families or do not speak English as a primary language.

Capital School District is primarily using the money to hire social workers for each of its schools to work with students who may face trauma at home or other circumstances that make it difficult to learn.

Giddens said the school has hired a full-time social worker to meet with students at a school in the district that serves a significant number of low-income or special needs students.

"She's seeing individual kids and seeing kids in groups during the day and also during her lunchtime. She has what's called her lunch bunch where she brings in kids with similar issues or concerns and meets with them," he said.
