Educational Foundation Delivers School Supplies to Cape Henlopen School District

MILTON, Del.- The Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation on Friday delivered more than $10,000 in school supplies to the nine schools in the Cape Henlopen School District.

This is the second year CHEF has provided school supplies. The money for the fund comes from individual contributors, business and fundraising events.

"As the educational foundation for the district, we decided to put together a fundraiser to help the teachers and the students in our community that had needs," said Jessica Tyndall, the Milton representative for the Cape Henlopen school district.

Mariner Middle School in Milton is one of the schools that receive supplies. Assistant Principal Emily Lehne said the donations benefit Mariner's diverse student body.

"We have students at every end of the spectrum financially, all of their backgrounds so varied," said Lehne. "When we can supply the items that they need to start their year off right and have everything they need to be successful in the classroom, it's a huge help."

CHEF told WBOC that teachers spend an average of $200-$500 of their own money to buy supplies for their classrooms. With help from CHEF, sixth grade science teacher Peggy McDaniel said that burden is taken off her shoulders.

"I mean every year, I probably purchase on my own 300 sheet protectors, it's just an awesome opportunity. It's less money out of our pockets and a fantastic organization that supports us," said McDaniel.

CHEF President Jeff Gordon said they also use their fund to cover the costs of an eighth grade trip to Florida each year, programs like STEM and the arts, and activities that promote diversity and inclusion.
