Inaugural Festival Copa Delmarva Brings Community Together

Posted: Updated:

FREDERICA, Del.- The first Festival Copa Delmarva brought both soccer players and soccer lovers to the DE Turf Complex on Sunday.

Eight teams from the Milford Soccer League competed for the cup and a season sponsorship by Telemundo Delmarva and WRDE. In addition to the day of games, there was a free soccer clinic for children, tacos from El Primo Taquerias and prizes and activities from Telemundo Delmarva and WRDE.

Christina Zuniga from Laurel brought her daughter Victoria to Festival Copa Delmarva, as Victoria's father and uncle both played.

"I think it's great," she says of the festival. "I think it's good to have something that kind of gets everybody involved and keeps everybody busy," she said

Players told WRDE the sense of community is as big of a win as the championship itself.

"Being able to bring a bunch of cultures in together and combine and play soccer all day is just a great idea," explained Real Shore FC Player Michael Shockley. "It's really nice."

DE Turf Executive Director Chris Giacomucci said the complex is often home to tournaments on Sundays and the Festival Copa Delmarva is something special.

"It's rewarding to see how DE Turf is impacting the Hispanic community," he told WRDE. "That's the beauty of sports and really one of the most rewarding parts of working here at DE Turf is that it's a venue that brings people together and that's what today is all about."

Event organizer Robert Wilkinson said the event was all about celebrating soccer and the Delmarva community at large--something not always seen at tournaments.

"We want to have families out here," he said. "We are just trying to make it fun while the tournament is going on at the same time."
