122 Dogs and Cats Arrive in Georgetown Ahead of Dorian

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - Animal shelters in Dorian's predicted path aren't taking evacuation orders lightly. Overnight the Brandywine Valley SPCA received 122 dogs and cats from the Coastal Carolinas to its Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown.

Close to 300 homeless pets fly ahead of Dorian. A Wings of Rescue flight sponsored by GreaterGood.org and the ASPCA brought the first group to the New Castle Airport on Tuesday. BVSPCA, its partner shelters in the area and ASPCA partners in New England were all there to greet them.

"The storm threat is pretty strong to the Coastal Carolinas," Marketing Director Linda Torelli tells reporters on Tuesday. "Right now people are being evacuated, so they're moving the pets out of the shelter that were already up for adoption. Hopefully the shelters won't be flooded but there is a chance."

BVSPCA isn't taking any chances. Neither is the Best Friends Animal Society who helped transport the second group by land. They arrived at the Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

For about a year now the Animal Rescue Center has served many purposes including helping animals displaced by storms, like Dorian. Over the next few days BVSPCA will provide veterinary services to get these pets ready for adoption.

"The Brandywine Valley SPCA looks to respond whenever there's a call to action," says Senior Director of Operations Walt Fenstermacher. "If there's an area that's affected by natural disaster or an area in need, we look to help whenever we're needed to."

In this case, the goal is not just to save animals from the storm. "They were looking for new homes previously in those areas," Fenstermacher explains. "By vacating those local shelters, it allows to have an open house for any animals that may be displaced by the future storm."

BVSPCA says their veterinary team is making sure all of the pets from Dorian receive any treatments that they need and that they're up to date on their vaccinations.  The pets will be spayed and neutered before finding their forever homes on Delmarva.
