New Technical High School Opens its Doors in Somerset County

Posted: Updated:

WESTOVER, Md.- Students in Somerset County started the school year with a brand new technical school.

"It's definitely an upgrade from what we had," says Daniel Baltezegar, who's taking classes in auto mechanics.

The $42 million Somerset County Technical High School opened its doors on the first day school offering state of the art facilities and hands-on training for hundreds of students in the county.

The school offers training on industries in high demand in Somerset County like mechanics for diesel engines, biomedical industries, criminal justice, and culinary arts.

"I don't feel like I'll ever be behind because of the amazing experience in this program. I've obtain so much information that kids my age just don't know," says Ashawnti Buckner, a student in the biomedical program.

"We want this new building to be more of a community center," explains Dr. John B. Gaddis, Somerset County's superintendent of schools. "We hope offer other programs in partnership with institutions like WOR-WIC Community College for those who live in the county but can't make it to Salisbury."
