Ocean City Awaits the Big Waves From Hurricane Dorian

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN CITY, Md - Hurricane Dorian is expected to churn up big waves this weekend.

Ocean City plans to keep its beaches open and not prevent people from going into the Atlantic. Ocean City Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin stated lifeguards will be staffed during their normal hours for this time of the year, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The bigger waves have brought excitement to the surfing community. "There is definitely a hype up to it," said Kevin Cranfield, who has been surfing for over 30 years and manages the K-Coast Surf Shop. "Ultimately we want to catch that perfect wave. We want the good waves but it is also just the thrill of getting up to that day."

Cranfield and his friends have been monitoring the weather reports and surf apps. He is targeting early Friday evening as the optimal time to catch the biggest waves. Also monitoring the situation are town officials.

"Currently there are no beach restrictions in place but we do know as the storm gets closer we are going to see the tides and currents changing," Ocean City Communications Manager Jessica Waters said.

The town plans to post updated information regarding the beaches on its Facebook and Twitter pages.
