Large Turnout for Emergency Preparedness Workshop in Sussex County

Posted: Updated:

ROXANA, Del.- Hundreds of people came out to the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company on Thursday to learn how to protect themselves during severe storms.

The Delaware Sea Grant, towns of South Bethany, Fenwick Island, and Selbyville hosted the Emergency Preparedness Workshop, targeted for adults ages 55 and over. While the workshop was long planned, it coincided with Hurricane Dorian moving farther north.

"Research shows that older adults are disproportionately impacted by these events," says Danielle Swallow, Delaware Sea Grant's planner and coastal hazards specialist. "We wanted to provide outreach and education to give them strategies for  being safe during these events whether they are sheltering in place or evacuating."

The workshop included procedures how to build an emergency kit, suggestions on organizing medical information, and presentations from first responders.

Among other things, Fenwick Island Police Chief William Boyden presented information on evacuation routes.

"When we ask them to evacuate, [we ask them] to leave when we tell them to because once the storm hits, you are trapped," he explains. "During Sandy we had four or five people in our town that were trapped and we couldn't get to them."

Delaware Sea Grant plans to put on similar workshops in the future. For more information, click here.
