James M. Bennett High Student Charged With Threat of Mass Violence

SALISBURY, Md.- Authorities say a student who attends James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury is in custody after threatening on social media to commit a school shooting. 

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said that shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, it was it was brought to the attention of law enforcement that the 16-year-old male student had made some concerning social media posts. According to the complaints, the student had posted a picture of a firearm and a tactical vest with comments that implied a desire to commit a shooting in the school.

A deputy was able to identify the author of the post and immediately responded to the student's home. At the conclusion of this investigation, during which the juvenile was interviewed, a decision was made to transport the juvenile back to the Sheriff’s Office.

The student, who was charged with threat of mass violence, was detained in the Lower Shore Children’s Center pending a future court hearing.
