Hurricane Dorian Brings Strong Winds and Rain to Chincoteague Island

Posted: Updated:

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Accomack County was one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Dorian as it moved up the coast. Some neighbors in Chincoteague say they're grateful the storm is moving well offshore.

"It's that time of year, we're always watching the ocean," Brian Shotwell of Chincoteague says.

Emergency officials in Chincoteague say they've been keeping a close eye on the weather conditions. The director of emergency services, Bryan Rush, says that while the area hasn't seen the worst of the storm system, it's given everyone a chance to prepare for hurricane season.

"Operationally wise, we were able to dust off some of the cob webs from last year," Rush says. "Because of course last year during the Labor Day holiday, we were dealing with a hurricane back then and now we're here this time of year again. It's a busy time of year for the Atlantic basin."

Long time islanders say the storm certainly isn't the first one to cross Chincoteague, and it won't be the last.

"You live in an island, you've got to be prepared," Robert Bolding of Chincoteague says. "You have to be ready to either stay or leave -- that's your choice."

The heavy rain and strong winds that battered the island Friday are moving offshore, leaving what should be a beautiful weekend in its wake.
