Furniture Masters Honor The Precision Handcrafting

SALISBURY, Md. - The National Folk Festival will be honoring Maryland's masters at the Folklife Stage this year.
Two of those masters come from St. Michael's.  Jim McMartin and Jim Beggins honor the art of handcrafting furniture.
"There are fewer people who are doing anything by hand anymore," Beggins said.
"I think in general people are losing the sense of how things are made, not just with wooden furniture, but in all traditional crafts," McMartin added.
The two have made a name for themselves through this underrated technique.  The kinds of install techniques will be demonstrated at the folk festival this weekend. Things like traditional case dovetails and how to build pieces without screws or glue.
"It's rare that we get to build something twice. Which is one of the down sides of being a custom furniture maker.  The learning curve of building something, like wow we built that, now we'll never build it again," Beggins said.
The two have designed furniture for Governor Hogan's state house and Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank's new home.
McMartin and Beggins will be demonstrating their craft all weekend at the Folklife Stage near Market Street Inn.  A presentation is scheduled for them to show off their skills on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
