Jury Selection Begins Tuesday in Conaway Rape Trial

Posted: Updated:
GEORGETOWN, Del - On Tuesday morning jury selection will begin for the first-degree rape trial of former University of Delaware player Clay Conaway in Delaware Superior Court in Georgetown. It will be the first of potentially six trials for Conaway. 12 jurors and up to four alternates will be selected.
Conaway's defense was granted its motion to separate the cases into multiple trials rather than one that was all-encompassing.In his July 30 decision, Judge Richard F. Stokes wrote, “There is a strong possibility that the jury may cumulate the evidence of the various crimes charged and find guilt when, if considered separately, it would not so find. These cases cannot be tied together."
Overall, Conaway, 23, of Georgetown, is facing six second-degree rape charges and the first-degree rape charge involving six different women. Conaway has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has been free on bond since the charges were filed. In March, he was given permission to work for his father's (Tim) construction company. Tim Conaway is a former Delaware State Police detective.
Clay Conaway is expected to appear in court on Tuesday for the jury selection. Opening statements of the trial are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16.
