Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a Tuesday morning motorcycle crash in Dover that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man.

Police said the accident happened at around 6 a.m., when a 2013 Augusta sport motorcycle was traveling southbound on DuPont Highway, south of Messina Hill Road. Troopers said that meantime, a 2004 Ford Excursion was also proceeding southbound on DuPont Highway, in front of the motorcycle.

Investigators said the operator of the motorcycle passed the Excursion on the left, subsequently losing control. The operator was then ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the left lane of travel.

Police said a 2002 Ford Explorer was southbound on DuPont Highway south of Messina Hill Road and subsequently struck the motorcycle operator in the left lane of travel.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old Dover man,  was transported to Christiana Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Excursion, a 25-year-old Dover woman, remained on scene. She was properly restrained and not injured, according to police.

The operator of the Explorer, a 24-year-old Smyrna woman, also remained on scene. Police said that she too was properly restrained and not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact Cpl/3 Joseph Lane at 302-698-8457.
