LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police say a bicyclist was critically injured after being struck by a car on Coastal Highway in Lewes on Wednesday afternoon.

An 89-year-old man was driving a Cadillac CTS down northbound Coastal Highway, nearing the intersection with King's Highway, according to police. Troopers said that meantime, a 79-year-old man was riding a bicycle on the same side of the road but in the bus/bike lane.

Troopers said the driver of the Cadillac failed to see the bicyclist while changing lanes to make a right turn onto Kings Highway. The right side of his car struck the bicycle. Police said the bicyclist was subsequently thrown from his bike.

The biker was wearing a helmet but was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Cpl. K. Argo of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-703-3264.
