Dover Downtown Business Tax Could be Fully Nixed

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- A tax on properties in downtown Dover used to pay for improvements in the so-called "Business Improvement District" could be going away for good, years after it was reduced to zero percent.

The Dover City Council has advanced an ordinance getting rid of the BID Tax, which was essentially done away with by city council members a few years ago when it was reduced to a rate of zero.

The move comes after some city leaders and business leaders suggested the tax could be used to pay for things like extra police cadet coverage in Downtown Dover.

Opponents of that idea say the BID tax essentially serves as "double taxation" for business owners already paying property taxes and utilities to the city.

A vote could come this month by city council members.
