SMYRNA, Del. - Smyrna Police confirmed they have found human remains in the area.

Officers believe the remains belong to someone less than 10 years old.

Cpl. Brian Donner, a Smyrna Police Department Spokesman, says police have not determined the age of the deceased, nor whether they are from a boy or a girl.

It's not clear how long the remains were in the area, though Donner said they appear to have been placed there in the last few weeks or months.

Donner says the remains were discovered by someone walking their dog.

Police said officers were called after possible human remains were found in the area of the Little Lass Fields on Duck Creek Parkway Friday around 5:30 p.m.

Smyrna PD said detectives are working with the Delaware Attorney General's Office, the office of the Chief Medical Examiner and members of the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office.

Anyone with information is urged to call to Det/Sgt Brien Street of the Smyrna Police Dept. at 302-653-9217.

Authorities said the investigation is still in its very early stages. Stay with WBOC for more information as it becomes available.
