Berlin Man Sentenced After Stealing Thousands of Dollars From Castle in the Sand Hotel

Posted: Updated:

SNOW HILL, Md. - A Berlin man was sentenced to seven years in prison with all but 14 months suspended after being found guilty of stealing money from an Ocean City hotel.

According to the Office of the State's Attorney for Worcester County, 51-year-old Richard Perry was sentenced Friday. It stems from a 2018 investigation by the Ocean City police department.

Authorities said hotel management for the Castle in the Sand Hotel told police that one of its employees had stolen thousand of dollars from the hotel between 2015 and 2018. After an extensive forensic audit, police said they were able to figure out it was Perry who had stolen more than  $162,000. Investigators said Perry simply took cash payments and deposited them into his own bank account.

In July of 2019, a judge delayed sentencing so Perry could pay a substantial amount of the restitution he owed to the hotel. The state's attorney's office said Perry forfeited over $30,000 seized by the Ocean City Police Department and provided a $10,000 cashier’s check to the victim. It was all part of his plea. On Friday, Perry provided another  $30,000 in restitution to continue repayment to the victim.

Authorities said Perry will serve five years of probation and was ordered to pay the remainder of the restitution through the Department of Parole and Probation.
