"Meterless Monday" Kicks off Off-Season in Rehoboth Beach

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Meters are off in Rehoboth Beach and both locals and local businesses are taking advantage of the turn of the season.

A number of local businesses, including Nicola Pizza, the Rehoboth Ale House, and the Pond, are taking part in the new "Locals Season" Discount Card. After purchasing the card for $15 ($10 if you buy Monday, Sept. 16), cardholders receive a 10 percent discount at any of the designated merchants on designated days. Users also entered into a monthly raffle each time they use the card.

"All the businesses here had the same motive and the same kind of feelings about what we need to do" says Gidget's Gadgets owner Stephen Fallon. "So it’s really great that they--they being Pete, Adam and Kelly--got together and stirred this up. It’s really a good thing."

Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Carol Everhart says the newly-deemed "Meterless Monday" kicks off a slew of off season specials and events.

"As you go into October even, you are going to see sidewalk sales, you are going to see two jazz festivals, you are going to see Sea Witch Festival and it just keeps going," she explains. "So really you know [we have] 52 weekends a year for sure and they are pretty much extended."

Many people say this is the best time of year to be at the beach.

"Low humidity, the meters are off, the crowd is down, I guess all the sun birds have gone home," says David Flipping. "So all of us locals get to come out here and have an awesome time."

Some summer ordinances are still in tact until the end of September, such as no dogs on the beach or boardwalk (both in Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach). In Lewes, beach parking meters are on through the end of the month, and downtown parking meters are live until mid-October.
