Milton's Rails to Trails Extension Starts in February

Posted: Updated:

MILTON, Del. - DelDot announced construction should begin in February for the second phase of Rails to Trails in Milton.

The $1 million extension is from Federal Street to Lavinia Street, a continuation of the trail from Chestnut Street to Federal Street.

The trail extension tracks along one side of Wagamon's West Shores neighborhood. Neighbors said they are worried about lighting that is included in the design of the trail.

"The lighting is a concern for all of us because most parks and other trails are closed at dusk." said Debra Walters who moved into Wagamon's West Shores full time this summer. "The concern of the lights would very close to the home and [they] may be a good safety feature but we don't believe it's necessary."

Milton Police Chief Robert Longo said lights will deter criminal activity and allow patrolling officers or neighbors to see anyone outside, rather than an unlit trail.

Wagamon's West Shores neighbor Delores Springer has lived in the neighborhood for thirteen years. She is excited for the trails to be finished.

"Well, I think it's better than having to drive all the time," said Springer. "Also, if someone is on the scooter or so forth and unable to walk, they have the ability to do so by the trails. So that's a good thing as well."

The project consists of 1,600 feet of paved trail and the reparation of a railroad bridge.
