Man Dies in Lincoln Dirt Bike Crash

LINCOLN, Del.-  Delaware State Police are investigating a deadly dirt bike crash that occurred late Tuesday night in Lincoln.

According to police, a trooper on patrol observed a green Kawasaki dirt bike, which is classified as a off-highway vehicle, traveling on Wilkins Road near Sussex Bayhealth Hospital.

Police said when the trooper attempted to pull over the dirt bike for not being fully equipped with a proper lighting source, the operator fled at a high speed leaving a significant distance between the trooper and himself.

Troopers said the dirt bike continued westbound on Johnson Road and Marshall Street when a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse stopped eastbound on Johnson Road was preparing to turn left onto Marshall Street.

The 49-year old female Traverse driver, from Milford, did not see the high speed dirt bike due to its lack of headlights, according to police. Police said that as the driver of the Traverse proceeded to turn left, the front of the dirt bike collided with the front fender of the Traverse and ejected the dirt bike operator.

Police said the dirt bike operator, 38-year-old Adam J. Burton of Lincoln, was taken to Sussex Bayhealth Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to police, Burton was driving without a helmet and without a proper motorcycle endorsement on his driver license.

The Traverse driver was also treated at Sussex Bayhealth Hospital and released.

Police report the roadway was closed for roughly three hours during the investigation and the road way since has been cleared.
