Maryland Sees Decline in Opioid-Related Deaths, Eastern Shore Does Not

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - It's a small win in the war against opioids. For the first time ever, Maryland saw a decrease in the number of opioid-related deaths. It happened in the second quarter of 2019, but unlike the trends, the numbers on the Eastern Shore continue to rise.

Talbot County Sheriff Joe Gamble says statewide there may be fewer deaths, but fentanyl-related deaths are still driving numbers up.

"We need to crack down on this," Gamble said. "Anything with fentanyl is going right through the roof as far as deaths. Even in our county, heroin deaths are down, but fentanyl is what's driving the deaths."

In every Eastern Shore county, deaths are on the rise as compared to last year. The only exception is Somerset County.

In neighboring Caroline County, Cathy Bowrey has fought the epidemic for years. She says a real breakthrough is still far-fetched.

"I'd like to say that we are but I don't feel that it's going to be any time soon," Bowrey said. "The reason being is because we do not have enough going on in the counties to help these people."

Until more help comes, Bowrey and Gamble say there is a decline in prescription drugs and heroin deaths. However, fentanyl remains the main culprit in opioid-related deaths on the Eastern Shore.
