Salisbury Looks into Separate Liquor Board

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. — For years the city of Salisbury has considered creating its own liquor board.

But a recent controversy between the Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver and the Maryland comptroller a firestorm has led to a potentially bigger divide.  Salisbury City Councilman Muir Boda says the time is now for the city to take action

"We were working on our one stop shop for businesses.  And so this was another piece of that puzzle to help us get completely there as far as regulating and permitting businesses within the city,” Boda said.

But for bar owners like Jeremy Norton, of Roadie Joe’s, the move could save around 15 percent for liquor sales.

"None of the savings are passed through to us and in turn, none of the savings are passed down to the consumer,” Norton said.

Norton says the current structure requires bar owners to get liquor through a county dispensary, but a private distributor would save him money.

"I just think that this will give us, everyone an equal opportunity to get the volume discounts, to make more money and expand our businesses,” Norton said.

The idea would still need council approval at the next work session on October 9.  But after that a potential city liquor board would need state approval during the next general assembly.
