New Sponsor Deal at Dover Could Guarantee Future NASCAR Races

Posted: Updated:
DOVER, Del - At the base of the Miles The Monster statue in what is known as Victory Plaza, the Dover International Speedway announced Thursday that Drydene engine oils and greases will sponsor the Oct. 6 NASCAR Cup race.

It is part of a multi-year deal. In addition to this year, Drydene is locked in for the sponsorship of the track's second race for 2020 and 2021.

It is the 2021 race that is of note. The contracts with all of the tracks currently on the Cup schedule expire after the 2020 season. It has created uncertainty for several of the venues that could normally count one one or two visits a year from the series. The fact that Dover has a sponsor deal for a race that is not guaranteed does show the Monster Mile is capable of having financial stability.

"We are not concerned about it at this point," Dover International Speedway President and CEO Mike Tatoian said. "We have great history obviously with 50 years. We provide a tremendous amount of racing and we are in a nice media market in the northeast so we feel comfortable going forward past 2020."

Staring in 1971, Dover has hosted two NASCAR Cup races each season. The 2021 schedule is expected to be announced next spring.
