Promoting Seat Belt Safety for Young Drivers

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- New data shows that many young drivers are not wearing seat belts. Maryland will be enforcing seat belt safety for young drivers. The Maryland Department of Transportation says education is key for driver awareness.

"I used to not wear a seat belt and I got a $90 ticket for that. Two of my friends actually got into a car accident. One of them kind of messed up his spleen from that, because he didn't have a seat belt on. Since then I've been wearing a seat belt," said Ahmed El-Sayed.

Some teens say they do not wear seat belts if they are going short distances, while others say it is better to be safe than sorry.

Driving instructors say wearing seat belts could be the difference between life and death. If you wear a seat belt correctly, you can reduce the risk of a fatal injury by 45 percent.

"We get testimonies of many that have been in a seat belt and had an accident, and they survived. They believe that without the seat belt they probably wouldn't [survive,]" says driving instructor Dianna Rucker-Dennis.

MDOT says passengers are more likely to buckle up when the driver is also belted.

By raising seat belt awareness, the state hopes to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in car accidents.
