Cool Things to Do Sept 21-22

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- "Locals' Summer" is in full swing on Delmarva with plenty of events up and down the coast this weekend.

One of the biggest off-season special events is Sunfest. The 45th annual festival brings arts and crafts, music, activities and more to Ocean City, Md.

"September is like a locals' summer so we are excited," says Ocean City Communications Manager Jessica Waters. "If you are looking for some fresh air, some fun, good food, great entertainment, then Sunfest is definitely where you want to be this weekend."

Also in Ocean City is the Treasures of the Earth gem, mineral, and jewelry show. Another place jewelry is on display is the Lewes Artists Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Participants get an inside look at how artists in the First Town in the First State perfect their craft.

"There's 20 great artists on this and everybody is different," says artist Steve Rogers. "You are going to see everything from jewelry to spectacular quilts to paintings and oil and acrylic--it's the whole spectrum of arts."

Also in Lewes is the 21st Annual Chautauqua where a series of performances, lectures and more focus on the 1960s at large and in Delaware.

"Since it's the 50th anniversary of so many important things, the moon landing, Woodstock, Dover International Speedway's 50th anniversary, we would do the 1960s," says Zwaanendael Museum Site Supervisor Bridget Warner. "It is pretty much our demographic. I think a lot of the people that come, our audience, were children in the 60's, so they will remember it."

Another weekend event with a good cause is the Empty Bowls event at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. With soups and desserts served in hand crafted bowls donated by local potters, money raised goes to the Harry K Foundation and the Milton Community Food Pantry.

"It's a good, happy feeling to come to an event, have a good time, but know that 100 percent of the money you spent is going to local efforts to fight hunger," says Rehoboth Sunrise Rotary Club member Amanda Peters.
