Worcester County HIDTA Designation Helps Police Combat Drug Epidemic

Posted: Updated:

SNOW HILL, Md. - Worcester County has been designated as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area by the Washington/ Baltimore HIDTA region.

Despite the new title, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office says it doesn't mean there's been a spike in crime. The designation allows the sheriff's office to receive federal funding for resources to help fight the drug epidemic.

"It's just an excellent opportunity for us in Worcester County and we're very proud to have this designation," Sheriff Matt Crisafulli said.

The sheriff's office applied for the title by compiling data on previous cases and all other relevant information. It gives federal funding to the sheriff's criminal enforcement division for things like training officers and getting equipment. It also gives them access to databases that are shared with police agencies across the region, so that officers in Worcester County can share and receive information on the drug dealers they're investigating.

"Having the access to federal funding and the information sharing, it's really going to be critical for us to continue our proactive approach to drug distribution and importation into Worcester County," Sheriff Crisafulli said.

Some neighbors say the new resource will have a positive effect on the community as the drug epidemic continues.

"The opioid epidemic is getting more and more severe," Shelia Jackson, a former longtime resident of Worcester County, said. "We need the sheriff's department, all the law enforcement, any sort of resource that they could acquire to get out here and help."

There are only two other counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore that are designated as a HIDTA. Those include Wicomico and Dorchester counties. For more information on HIDTA's, visit here: http://www.hidta.org/
