Dorchester County Celebrates its 350th Anniversary

Posted: Updated:

DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md.- Dorchester County took a step back in time Sunday in honor of its 350th anniversary. Community members gathered to open their 50-year-old time capsule.

The city of Cambridge, which is also the Dorchester County seat, hosted the anniversary celebration from noon to 5 p.m. at the Dorchester County Courthouse. It was a day full of heritage, history and new beginnings in Dorchester County. The celebration began with a heritage village that included many organizations, societies, and reenactors.

It was a glimpse into the past for many, who came back 50 years later to see what they put inside the time capsule. The community of Dorchester County made a time capsule back in 1969 for the county's 300th anniversary. Gloria Whaley was one of the many who put a special item in the capsule 50 years ago.

"I remember there was a parade going on at the time and they were asking us to put things in the capsule. So I have three children and I put money in there for them. I wanted them to have a little something when we opened the capsule," explains Whaley.

Singer Phil Feldman performed his song at the celebration called "The Ballad of Dorchester." Feldman wrote this song when he was 15-years-old and he never thought he would be performing it 50 years later.

"The town councilmen at the time Tom Flowers asked if I would write a song for the tricentennial and I did. I never expected to ever perform it again, but nonetheless I did it at age 15," says Feldman.

For the past 50 years, the unopened time capsule sat in the Dorchester County Courthouse. For Manger of the Heart of Chesapeake County Heritage Area, Julie Gilberto-Brady she says this day is a way to showcase Dorchester County.

"It's an opportunity to celebrate the deep heritage of Dorchester County and everything that makes us who we are from the water to the native american culture," explains Gilberto-Brady.

The community of Dorchester County was reunited with items such as hand written letters, newspapers, notebooks, ribbons, medals and etc. Julie Gilberto-Brady says the contents of the time capsule will remain in the historical of Dorchester County. After Sept. 25, the items will be on display at the Dorchester County Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park. If any personal letters are in the capsule, Dorchester County staff will attempt to contact the person after all contents have been cataloged and all documents copied.

Julie Gilberto-Brady says over the next couple of months Dorchester County will be preparing another time capsule from memories of Sunday's celebration. Gilberto-Brady says the next time capsule is set to open in 2069.
