UPPER FAIRMOUNT, Md.- A group of volunteers in Somerset County is starting work to restore the historical Fairmount Academy, located on Route 361.

The two-story Gothic Revival schoolhouse dates back to the 1800s and served as a school until 1969.

Today, the building and other structures on the property sit in disrepair.

"I'm sure anyone who was raised here, born here, had relatives here, can walk into the schoolhouse and find records of their ancestors," said Tracy Pollitt, a neighbor who is helping lead the renovation efforts.

Pollitt said the vision is to re-open the academy and the building next door that provided additional classroom space as museums and public meeting and event spaces.

Moving forward, Pollitt said the plan is to re-establish the Fairmount Academy historical non-profit association. That will allow the group to apply for grant funding that will go toward renovation work.

If you want to get involved in the project, a public meeting will take place Sunday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the firehouse in Fairmount.
