More Events, Rentals Planned for Rehoboth Beach Convention Center

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- New hourly rates and more types of events could be coming to the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.

During the Bandstand/Convention Center Hall/Special Events Committee meeting Monday morning, committee members discussed creating both hourly and half-day rental rates. It was proposed that non-profits pay $75 per hour and $250 for a half-day, whereas for-profit organizations would pay $100 per hour and $300 for a half day.

Commissioner Lisa Schlosser said the shorter rentals would be ideal for things like group exercise classes, and would increase community activities at the convention center.

Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Carol Everhart agreed.

"[If] I just have a small group that wants to do anything from an aerobics class or a yoga class to I just have a small group that wants to meet and there are 23 of us and we don't have a place that can take care of that for us, I think it's worth [it]," she told WRDE. "If it's sitting empty, might as well rent."

The committee planned to further examine the new rental plan at its next meeting, but decided existing rental rates would stay the same for next year, something that also pleased Everhart.

The committee discussed marketing to more groups, especially mid-week conferences, to
further the use of the convention center. Member Richard Green said working with local hotels could help attract more business.

"Right now we are in a reactive mode. At what point do we have to get more proactive," he says. "Whether it's marketing and advertising or whether it's actually a human sales person [...] going out there and asking for business."

Enhancing the convention center's features was also a main point of the meeting. Rehoboth Jazz Festival head Dennis Santangini says having designated parking would be a huge help for the festival, as many attendees currently struggle to find spots. He also said more technology and new chairs could bring in more people.

"If you are doing a musical event or any other event that you need music or video, we have to bring that into the city. "If they did have [lighting] here our organization would do more shows during the year, but it's so costly for us to have people bring this into our facility."

Data presented at the meeting showed the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center was busier this year than last, with 2018's revenue totaling $86,040. To date this year, the center has produced $87,050 in revenue, and organizations are still inquiring for events in November and December.

The next Bandstand/Convention Center Hall/Special Events Committee meeting is scheduled for mid-October.
