LAUREL, Del.- Delaware State Police say troopers arrested a 36-year-old Laurel man for his 5th offense DUI and related charges following a crash that left a woman and a young child injured.

Police said that just before 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, troopers were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash that had occurred on Sussex Highway (US 13), south of Trussum Pond Road.

The ensuing investigation revealed that a 2008 Chrysler minivan was stopped at a red light on northbound US 13, when a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage, driven by Jerod M. Kernodle, struck the rear of the vehicle.

Troopers said that when they made contact with Kernodle, they detected the odor of alcohol and a DUI investigation ensued.  A computer inquiry revealed that Kernodle  had four previous DUI convictions, making this his fifth offense, and a suspended driver’s license.

The driver of the minivan, a 33-year-old woman, and her 7-year-old passenger, were transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Kernodle was not hurt and was taken into custody at the scene, according to police.  He was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:

  • 5th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Felony)
  • Two counts of third-degree vehicular assault
  • Driving while suspended

Kernodle was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $6,000 cash only bond.
