Maryland Real ID Countdown is On; What You Need to Do Before October 1, 2020

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - All Maryland drivers need to have a Real ID by October 1, 2020....or else.

A year from Tuesday, those without a real ID will no longer be able to board planes or enter federal facilities.

"The difference is the REAL ID license will have the REAL ID star on there. The other important thing to know is that you must have documents on file with us so it's not just enough to have the license. You have to make sure those documents are on file," MVA Administrator Chrissy Niezer said.

Those documents include a birth certificate, social security card and two forms of Maryland residency.  Congress passed the federal measure after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

"It could be a good step in homeland security especially. I would like for everyone to go out and do that because it's just one more step the United States is taking to be safe," Brian Neilson said.

The only way to check to see if your ID is compliant, visit the MVA's website.  Appointments online can be made to save time at local MVA locations.
