Breast Cancer Awareness and National Pizza Month Kick off with a Fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Breast Cancer Awareness and National Pizza Month both kicked off on Tuesday. Grotto Pizza holds a fundraiser during this month every year. This one gives back to the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Susan G. Komen Maryland Executive Director Michael Jessup, and the foundation's new Delmarva Development Manager, Karen Falk,  sat down for lunch at Grotto Pizza to launch a new fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research.

"We all want one thing," Jessup says. "We want to get rid of this disease and we want those who have it to live prosperous lives. It's important for us to raise dollars because it allows us to do special things in the community that really help."

Grotto Pizza is combining it's celebration of National Pizza Month with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. $2 from every specialty pizza purchased will go towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Specialty pizzas include the Mama Grotto, Meat Lover's, Bakers Choice, Milano, Veggie Bianco, Grand Fiesta, and Gluten Free

"Every year for National Pizza Month we do some type of promotion," says Grotto Pizza Vice President Jeff Gosnear. "We decided that this year we wanted to do something that was going to give back. It was a natural fit being National Pizza Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month that we then would partner with Susan G. Komen and give back to the community."

Miriam Reed of Bear, Delaware had Grotto's pizza on her mind and her face lit up when she realized the restaurant was launching this fundraiser. "Anything that can help beat breast cancer is important," she says.

Falk says she has lost family and friends to breast cancer and that her goal is to bring the community together to conquer it. "It is a launch for breast cancer education month," she says. "It's great to know that there's action taking place and that the funds remain here."

Last year the foundation raised about $175,000 in the foundation's Maryland territory alone. Jessup hopes they can raise a quarter of a million dollars or more this year and for years to come.

Other Susan G. Komen fundraisers on Delmarva include:

- Crooked Hammock Brewery - Lewes

- Cuvee Ray Wine Dinner on October 16th - Rehoboth Beach

- Coastal Coffee - Ocean City
