Locals Respond to Fenwick Island State Park Additions at Open House

Posted: Updated:

FENWICK ISLAND, Del.- Additions to Fenwick Island State Park that would accompany an offshore wind farm received mixed reviews from locals at an open house on Wednesday.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control invited the public to an open house at the Fenwick Island Town Hall. Those who attended received information and spoke to staff members about onshore additions that would be paid by Orsted, the company that is proposing an offshore wind farm called Skip Jack. The additions include a parking garage, pedestrian overpass and more.

Skip Jack Wind Farm Development Director Joy Weber said she is excited about the onshore portion of the project.

"I think we have the opportunity to make some really amazing improvements to the park that will allow greater use of the park," said Weber. "And more Delawareans can actually drive and access the park."

Some locals are concerned that the additions will cause more traffic.

"We don't want to become another Ocean City. Nothing against Ocean City, but Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach are beach communities that are considered quiet, smaller communities," said Janet Dudley-Eshbach, a former president of Salisbury University.

Others are worried that the additions are just promises.

"There needs to be accountability. Whatever they are saying they are going to do to improve Fenwick Island Park, they [should] do it," said Jim Becker.

DNREC said that there will be a formal agreement to confirm the additions will be implemented and that both the onshore and offshore projects will happen simultaneously.

All the information presented at the open house was also posted online. DNREC will accept comments for the next three weeks.
