Neighbors Welcome Maryland County Burn Bans During Dry Weather Spell

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After burn bans were announced in three Eastern Shore Maryland counties, neighbors say they welcome the idea during this unseasonably hot and dry weather.

Somerset, Dorchester and Wicomico Counties announced burn bans, which essentially prohibits any outdoor burning of trash, leaves or brush. Princess Anne Deputy Fire Chief Bob Wells says a recent controlled burn in another county got out of control.

"Someone was burning trash in their backyard and it got into the rest of the brush and fields around their house," Deputy Chief Wells said.

When another department approached Wells about taking the idea of a burn ban before emergency officials and the county commissioners, Wells said he was all in.

"Everything is really dry. We haven't had rain in quite a while and it doesn't look like we're gonna get any in the near future," Deputy Chief Wells said. "You know, property, wildlife, the wildlife management area, the woods... Somerset County is kind of loaded with that and agriculture, farm fields."

Somerset County instituted the ban Tuesday, before Dorchester and Wicomico followed suit. Neighbors think it's a good idea.

"I don't think we should be burning when it's windy and it's dry because not only could we hurt ourselves, we could hurt our neighbors," Annette Cottman of Princess Anne said.

Some say they hope it will make others think twice about starting a fire right now.

"It'll make them more aware that if they're burning anything, it's a bad idea because one spark could catch a whole woods on fire, a house on fire, anything," John Collier of Princess Anne said. "And as dry as it is, that's all it would take would be a spark."

Wells said the bans usually last until there's a period of time with a couple inches of rain. For more specific information on each ban in the three counties, visit here.
