EASTON, Md.- The 12th annual Chesapeake Film Festival kicked off on Thursday.
Workers at the Avalon Theater in Easton were preparing all day for the eight-day event.

"We are about community, but not only are we here to help he community. This is about our passion for the silver screen," says the programs artistic director Cid Collins Walker.

With hundreds of submissions, it's a competitive feat to have your work on the big screen.

"Anyone can enter their film and we will consider it. If we receive 500 notifications of film makers that want to be considered we will consider it and we look at all 500 films," Walker said.

Tonight's event consists of two movie premiers and a reception.

Other events this week include dozens of short films and documentaries airing in Easton, Oxford, and Cambridge. While the films aired include comedies, action, and adventure, many will test limits.

"One of the things the Chesapeake Film Festival emphasizes is the need to educate and to bring these really compelling stories to the table," says board member James Currie.

The festival runs today until Oct. 10.
