Residents Give DelDOT Feedback on Coastal Highway Plan

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del - Local residents had the opportunity to review and give their input on the Delaware Department of Transportation's plan to eliminate the current Minos Conaway Road/Coastal Highway intersection at a Thursday workshop held at Beacon Middle School.

The proposals calls for creating an access point at the Nassau Bridges.  A new road will connect Janice Road where Lewes Fire Station #2 is located, and lead back to Minos Conaway.

From 2008 - 2018 there have been 37 crashes just at that intersection. During the same period of time 44 other incidents have occurred between Minos Conaway and the bridges.  Having the access at the bridge saves some expense for DelDOT.

"Typically when you have a grade separated intersection it includes building new infrastructure for a bridge to separate the elevation of the two roads intersecting," DelDOT Planning Manger Ed Robles explained. "Because of the decommission of the railroad, we are able to use that space."

Currently, the bridge spans a portion of the Georgetown-Lewes Trail. The addition of a road for motor vehicles concerns Lewes resident Bonnie Mahr.

"Most bikers will be very much in favor of a fence separating the bike path where it will parallel the new road," she said. "There is a small stretch where the trail and the road are in close proximity."

The feedback submitted will be evaluated as part of the planning stage. DelDOT hopes to have the design for the project finalized by 2022. Click here to review DelDOT's Minos Conaway plan.
