MILTON, Del.- Delaware State Police have identified the driver killed Thursday night after his car struck a tree in Milton.

Police say 64-year-old Joshua Clendaniel 3rd of Milton, died after the car he was driving struck a tree in Milton late Thursday night.

Troopers said it happened at around 11 p.m., when a 2000 Toyota Avalon was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1), north of Hudson Road (CR 258), and approaching Lockerman Road (Side Access Road).

Police said that for unknown reasons, Clendaniel failed to stay in his lane and went off the east edge of Coastal Highway. After exiting the roadway, the car continued traveling in a northerly direction along the grass shoulder of Coastal Highway where it eventually crossed over Lockerman Road and struck a tree.

Police said the driver and sole occupant, a 64-year-old Milton man, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene.  His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

Northbound Coastal Highway in the area of Lockerman Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
