WESTOVER, Md.- A Somerset Intermediate School student was found in possession of a gun Friday, authorities say.

According to Dr. John B. Gaddis, superintendent of Somerset County Public Schools, a student in "crisis" fled Somerset Intermediate School and as the student fled a comment was made to some other students.

The other students immediately told staff and emergency personnel was activated, Gaddis said. He said the student was found and the student's personal belongings searched. Gaddis said a firearm was found and has been confiscated. There is no word yet on whether the gun was loaded.

The student and possessions are now in the custody of the Somerset County Sheriffs Office, according to Gaddis.

The superintendent said a search of the school turned up no further issues.

"This is a scary situation for all of us and the investigation will continue," Gaddis said in an online post. "We felt the need to be transparent so everyone was aware and a robo call will be sent home."

Gaddis is applauding the students who "did not hesitate to notify the administration." he also thanked the personnel from the school system and the Somerset County Sheriffs Office for their "quick and efficient" response.

Friday night, Somerset County State's Attorney Wessmann Garner said in a statement: "As many parents know, there was a scary incident today at Somerset Intermediate School today. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, through their school resource officers responded quickly to the situation and it was addressed and the person is detained. The situation is being fully investigated by my office and the Sheriff’s Office. It appears as though no threat was made towards the school or other students. We will continue to fully investigate all possible information regarding this incident to make sure every student is as safe as possible. Thank you to our school resource officers who were able to respond quickly to this and make our schools safe."
