Wings & Wheels Festival Takes Flight in Georgetown

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Wings & Wheels is underway at the Delaware Coastal Airport, with the event starting with both education and inspiration.

Friday's "Pathways to Aviation" program kicked off the festival. High school students met with various representatives from branches of the military and higher education aviation programs.

"It's not just about being a pilot. It's the entire spectrum," explains Delaware Aviation Museum Director Ron Covais. "The aviation industry in America is one of the most profound in terms of employment, in terms of technology, and exporting."

Additionally, students spoke with Maj. Anthony Bombaci from Dover Air Force Base and with Col. Charles McGee. McGee is a Tuskegee Airman, a pilot from World War II's all African-American fighter unit.  McGee flew 136 combat missions in WWII and went on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam wars. McGee and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen battled both the Axis powers and racism at home during the war. McGee emphasized the power of perseverance to students on Friday.

"The idea that someone can't do something is not good in any aspect," he says. "It takes the education, the operative to be prepared for the opportunities there, and what the country needs."

Wings & Wheels Chair Linda Price says the event is just as much about inspiration as it is about education.

"It's a way for the Delaware Aviation Museum and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce to kind of give back to the community," she says. "To really recognize all these heroes that we've had from the past wars."

Wings & Wheels' Saturday events include a U.S. Naval Academy parachute team demonstration, a flour bombing competition, entertainment and plenty of vintage aircraft and cars on display.
