Commercial Trucks Blocked, Stuck Amidst Hectic Bay Bridge Traffic

Posted: Updated:

KENT ISLAND, Md. - Bay Bridge backups returned with a vengeance Thursday night. It started with two tweets about 40 minutes before the westbound span of the bridge changed to two-way traffic. But commercial trucks were not allowed because of the narrowed down lanes. For many truck drivers, it was too late to reroute. Many parked on shoulders along Route 8 or at nearby gas stations until traffic cleared about three hours later.

Now, Wilson Transportation Services Owner Erika Wilson says she's preparing for the worst: Round 2 of more backups as more traffic trickles through the bridge this weekend.

"We're all not looking forward to it. That's for sure," Wilson said."

Wilson says communication is key.

"We get notifications when there's an emergency alert or an Amber alert," Wilson said. "This is for two years of construction. Give us some kind of warning!"

Jared Collier of AIM Transport agrees. He says trucks will have to plan ahead - either wait until traffic clears or drive 100-miles north and out of the way - or suffer the consequences.

"We've literally got drivers that we're rerouting right now because they've gone through a traffic pattern where trucks aren't allowed to cross in either direction," Collier said.

Maryland's Transportation Authority (MdTA) says they are working to add signs and earlier notifications for commercial truck drivers. The agency says they're also speaking with Maryland's Motor Truck Association to find solutions regarding Bay Bridge changes.
