DCF: Latino Population in Sussex County is Growing Exponentially

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- The Delaware Community Foundation presented a report on the status of the Latino community in Sussex County.

DCF hopes that the report, called Perspectives on the Latino Population in Sussex County, will serve as a resource for nonprofit organizations, community leaders and others striving to engage and aid the Hispanic community in Sussex County.

According to the study, the Latino population in Sussex is made up of more than 20,000 people who contribute over $50 million in tax revenue to Delaware annually.

The report also shows that there are more than 800 Latino-owned businesses in the county and that Latinos are buying homes, holding jobs, and going to school and church.

According to the study, despite the growth, "Sussex County Latinos still face challenges related to language and cultural differences, unfamiliarity with U.S. systems and processes, immigration status and more."

In a statement, DCF President & CEO Stuart Comstock-Gay described the report’s findings as encouraging and inspiring.

“Sussex County’s vibrant and diverse Latino community is bringing new passion to the belief in the American Dream,” said Comstock-Gay.

The report was researched and written by Dr. Jennifer Fuqua and Dr. April Veness at the University of Delaware in collaboration with Dr. Christine Cannon, executive director of the Arsht-Cannon Fund at the DCF; La Colectiva de Delaware; La Esperanza; and other partners.
